The RBA’s Note Issue Department is responsible for maintaining confidence in Australia’s banknotes through activities that include research into and development of new banknote designs and security features, the supply of good quality, authentic banknotes to meet the community's demand, and informing and educating the public about banknotes and their security features.

Note Issue Department oversees all aspects of the production and issuance of Australia's banknotes with the objective of ensuring public confidence in banknotes as an effective means of payment and a store of wealth. In doing so it manages every phase of the banknote life cycle, along with the supply, functionality and security of Australia's banknotes.

The RBA employs a medium-sized scientific research team at its Craigieburn premises to assist with the Bank's role of ensuring confidence in Australian Banknotes.

We are seeking a Laboratory Technician to undertake work in its Banknote Evaluation Laboratory which is located at its Craigieburn facility, co-located on the Note Printing Australia site.  Successful candidates will have backgrounds in the area of laboratory analysis/testing in disciplines such as chemistry, physics, forensic science, materials science, material/chemical engineering, pharmaceutical, food, or other industry based testing environments.

The key responsibilities of this role will include (but are not limited to):

  • Conduct analysis on new and circulating banknotes and security features
  • Implement new methodologies for testing banknotes and security features
  • Maintain security materials in compliance with the RBA security requirements
  • Perform destruction of security material
  • Assist in tasks associated with the Banknote Evaluation Laboratory
  • Deliver specialised technical services as required
  • Assist in coordinating, scheduling and prioritising laboratory works
  • Other administrative duties as required by Note Issue Management

You will have contact with staff across the Note Issue Department and the wider Bank, along with external parties such as Australian Federal Police and key suppliers.

To be successful in this role, you will need to have:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications or extensive relevant experience in a scientific or technical discipline
  • A thorough understanding of quality assurance testing, compliance and AQL
  • Demonstrated experience in testing laboratories
  • Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated sound scientific analytical skills
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Well-developed problem solving skills
  • Demonstrated experience in safe work practices

Candidates with a background in the Physical or Chemical Sciences would be highly regarded.

Successful applicants will be subject to Australian government security clearance vetting, which requires candidates to hold Australian citizenship.
